General Pre-Surgery Guidelines
These guidelines apply to most orthopedic surgeries. Your specific procedure page will have additional details.
1-2 Weeks Before Surgery
- Complete all pre-operative testing as ordered
- Stop blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medications as directed
- Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery
- Prepare your home for recovery (remove tripping hazards, set up recovery area)
- Fill prescriptions for post-operative medications
The Night Before
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight (unless otherwise instructed)
- Shower with antibacterial soap
- Do not shave the surgical area
- Remove nail polish and jewelry
- Get a good night's rest
What to Expect Day of Surgery
Arrival
Arrive at the surgery center at your scheduled time. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Leave valuables at home. Bring your ID and insurance cards.
Pre-Op Preparation
You'll change into a hospital gown and meet with your surgical team. An IV will be started, and you may receive medications to help you relax.
Surgery
You will receive anesthesia and the surgery will be performed. Your family will be updated on your progress and notified when surgery is complete.
Recovery Room
After surgery, you'll wake up in the recovery room where nurses will monitor your vital signs and manage your pain. Once stable, you'll be discharged or moved to your room.
When to Call Your Doctor
After surgery, it's important to monitor for signs of complications. Contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following:
Warning Signs
- Fever over 101.5°F (38.6°C)
- Increasing redness, swelling, or warmth at the incision site
- Drainage or pus from the incision
- Severe pain not relieved by medication
- Numbness or tingling that worsens
- Calf pain, swelling, or tenderness (possible blood clot)
- Shortness of breath or chest pain (seek emergency care)
